Why unused data is a security risk

The data you forgot about is the data you cannot protect.

Security teams protect what they know about. Digital waste is, almost by definition, what nobody is watching: the export saved to a shared drive years ago, the contractor account that was never closed, the backup of a system that no longer exists.

More data, more exposure

Every copy of sensitive data is another place it can leak. Duplicates multiply the attack surface without adding value. Orphaned accounts give attackers a way in that no one will notice being used.

Retention is a compliance question

Data protection laws, including the UAE PDPL and the EU GDPR, expect companies to keep personal data only as long as needed. Data kept past that point is a liability, whatever its storage cost.

Cleaning safely

Deleting data carelessly creates its own risk. That is why SIVA never acts alone: it queues each action, the owner approves it, and the audit trail records it. The goal is less data, handled with more care.
